Dangerous Driving: Put Your Phone Down

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

My personal PSA for today: Put your phone down when driving. Too many people that I know feel the need to be on their phone while driving. Regardless of your driving skill level, being on your phone while driving is a huge hazard not only to you but everyone else you encounter on the road. It's hard to believe that you can't go twenty minutes, or however long it takes for you to drive somewhere, without texting, tweeting or snapchating.  Here are some guidelines that you should have for your phone while operating a vehicle.

1. Turn It On Silent: If you can't hear your phone ringing or getting a notification then you are less likely to check it.

2. Have Your Friend Respond: If you are driving with a friend in the front seat, have them answer your phone or respond to a text message if it is necessary.

3. Let Your Friends Know You Are Driving: If you are in the middle of a conversation via text, Facebook or whatever, let the person you're talking to know you'll be getting behind the wheel. This prevents them from sending you a message and tempting you to respond

4. Don't Respond To Others Driving: If your friend sends you a snap or a text and you can see they are driving don't respond! Chances are if they sent the message while driving they will have no problem looking at and responding to your message. You don't want to be "the last text". Be smart and help your friends out.

5. Pull Over: If you absolutely have to respond to someone or make a call, pull over. That way all your attention can be focused on the conversation not split between talking and driving.

6. Speak Up: If you're the passenger and the driver is constantly on their phone, speak up! It's not safe and you don't want your life (or theirs) in danger because of their bad driving habits.

Please don't use your phone while driving and encourage your friends to do the same.

  2. #6 is something I've done plenty of times! I have one specific friend that is horrible at texting while driving and it scares me to DEATH. I've taken her phone from her and said she'll get it back after we've arrived. I sometimes will put mine on airplane mode.
